Health In Mind
Health in Mind is a charity promoting positive mental health and wellbeing in Scotland.
EAMH, or the Edinburgh Association for Mental Health as we were previously known, was set up in 1982 by a group of interested people, initially to take over some flats then rented for ex-patients by the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. We are proud that today, providing accommodation and support to people to help them maintain their tenancies is still a core part of our work. At the start, we worked from a desk in the offices of the Barony Housing Association, before moving in 1984 to our current accommodation.
In 1984, we set up our befriending and counselling services, as well as Oasis, which works with women in South Edinburgh. Around that time, CAPs and the Patient’s Council were also set up by EAMH, along with the Edinburgh Mental Health Forum, still supported by us today!
As we progressed into the nineties, our work with black and minority ethnic men developed, initially through the ‘Wellbeing’ project, leading to the now well-established Men in Mind service.
In 2001, our first research into the needs of female survivors of childhood sexual abuse, by Dr Sarah Nelson, took place, leading to further research relating to the needs of both men and women, underpinning a range of counselling and support services for survivors which has developed in recent years.
Today, Health in Mind is a well respected and established organisation working in the Borders, Mid and East Lothian and Edinburgh, with our partnerships more important than ever before.
